Filament Tape Selection Guide: Mono-Directional vs. Bi-Directional (and When Double-Sided Wins)

Filament tape — plastic film reinforced with glass or synthetic fibers — is the workhorse of bundling, strapping and carton reinforcement. But "filament tape" covers three different constructions, and picking the wrong one is the most common reason for tape failure on the line. Here's how to choose.

The three families

Mono-directional . The reinforcing fibers run in one direction — along the length of the tape. All of the tensile strength is concentrated where the load is: pulling, strapping, bundling. A typical medium-duty grade like JLT-602 delivers 124 lbs/in (550 N/25 mm) tensile on a 3.9 mil PET backing. This is the right choice for wrapping and bundling, carton sealing, and tear strips — anywhere the stress runs along the tape.

Bi-directional . Fiberglass reinforcement runs in both directions, forming a mesh. You trade some length-direction strength for resistance to multi-directional stress: palletizing, reinforcing heavy cartons, applications where the load pulls across the tape as well as along it. JLW-2050, for example, offers 124 lbs/in tensile in a bi-directional construction.

Double-sided filament / tissue tapes . When the job is bonding two surfaces together rather than strapping — mounting, splicing, laminating — a double-sided construction is the answer. (Note: some double-sided grades are engineered with zero peel on one concept — e.g. JLW-308 is designed not to stick to the outer surface — so check the TDS before specifying.)

How to read the spec sheet

• Tensile strength — the headline number. US buyers work in lbs/in; most other markets use N/25 mm. Match it to your load with margin, not exactly.
  
  
• Thickness — in mils (US) or mm. Thicker generally means stronger and stiffer, but also harder to tear by hand and more expensive per roll.
  
  
• Adhesive type — synthetic rubber gives aggressive tack on corrugated and film; check low-temperature performance if your warehouse runs cold.
  
  
• Elongation and holding power — low elongation (3–5%) means the bundle stays tight; holding power tells you it stays stuck.
  
  
• Residue — if the tape comes off the product or a reusable container, specify a residue-free grade (the JLT line includes 11 clean-removal options).

Quick decision framework

Bundling pipes, rods, lumber → Mono-directional, medium to high tensile. Carton sealing, tear strips → Mono-directional, economical grade. Palletizing, multi-direction stress → Bi-directional. Bonding / mounting two surfaces → Double-sided filament or tissue tape. Clean removal from product → Residue-free mono-directional.

One caution that applies to every row: published values are laboratory averages. Run the shortlisted grade on your own line — with your cartons, your climate, your line speed — before committing to volume.
