Reinforced water-activated kraft tape is marketed as recyclable with the carton — and on paper, it is. The kraft backing and the starch-based adhesive both break down in the repulper. But the fiberglass reinforcement does not: in paper mills, glass filaments are screened out during repulping and typically end up landfilled as process waste. For buyers who need a genuine mono-material claim — for EPR reporting, retailer plastic-free scorecards, or their own sustainability targets — that screening step is the weak link. JL3’s E series answers it directly: the same reinforced kraft tape construction, with plant-fiber yarn in place of every glass filament.
The change is exactly one component. The kraft paper backing, the water-activated adhesive, the reinforcement layout, and the tape thickness are unchanged; only the yarn material swaps from fiberglass to plant fiber. The TDS designates these models “100% recycle reinforced water-activated tape,” meaning backing, adhesive, and reinforcement can all be recycled along with the packaging materials. The current range covers the full duty spread: JLN-3150E (light duty), JLN-31120E and JLN-37120E (heavy duty), plus JLN-28160E, a self-adhesive kraft tape reinforced with plant-fiber yarn in a diamond pattern for lines without a water-activated dispenser.
Comparing each E model against its fiberglass twin isolates the cost of the swap — same backing weight, same yarn layout, same thickness. The table below uses machine-direction (MD) and cross-direction (CD) tensile strength, the numbers that decide carton-holding performance.
| Model | Reinforcement | Tensile MD | Tensile CD | Thickness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JLN-3150 (fiberglass) | G110 glass MD / G150 glass CD | 58 lbs/in | 22 lbs/in | 5.5 mils |
| JLN-3150E (plant fiber) | 300D plant yarn MD / 200D plant yarn CD | 50 lbs/in | 22 lbs/in | 5.5 mils |
| JLN-37120 (fiberglass) | G75 glass MD / G150 glass CD | 90 lbs/in | 31 lbs/in | 7.5 mils |
| JLN-37120E (plant fiber) | 600D plant yarn MD / 200D plant yarn CD | 76 lbs/in | 27 lbs/in | 7.5 mils |
The trade-off is measurable and honest: the plant-fiber versions give up roughly 14–16% of machine-direction tensile strength (58 to 50 lbs/in on the light-duty pair; 90 to 76 lbs/in on the heavy-duty pair), while cross-direction strength is identical on the light-duty pair (22 lbs/in) and close on the heavy-duty pair (31 to 27 lbs/in), and thickness does not change at all. In practice, that means the E series covers the same box-weight classes — 3150E for light cartons, 37120E for heavy cartons above 90 lbs — with margin to spare wherever the fiberglass original was not already at its limit.
| Your requirement | Specify | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mono-material / plastic-free packaging claim | E series | No glass filaments for the mill to screen out; the whole seal recycles with the carton |
| EPR reporting or retailer scorecard on packaging | E series | Cleaner end-of-life story for audits and questionnaires |
| Maximum strength per inch of width, cost-driven | Standard fiberglass (3150 / 37120) | Highest MD tensile in the same footprint; the established price performer |
| No water-activated dispenser on the line | JLN-28160E self-adhesive | Plant-fiber reinforcement in a pressure-sensitive kraft tape, 38 lbs/in MD |
| Recycled-content backing requirement | R series (3150R / 37120R) | Recycled kraft backing with standard fiberglass reinforcement; pairs with the same logic |
Switching to the E series requires no process change. Application is identical — moisten the adhesive side and apply — so existing water-activated dispensers and case-sealing setups run the same rolls. Storage follows the same rule as all water-activated kraft: 39–79°F (4–26°C), 40–50% relative humidity, rotate inventory, with a two-year shelf life on the water-activated models and one year on the self-adhesive 28160E. JL3 holds FSC certification (FSC-C191983), and the line has passed EU PPWR screening for PFAS and heavy metals, so the sustainability claim rests on tested compliance, not just material choice.
JL3 builds the E series on the same lines as its standard reinforced kraft tapes, so plant-fiber and fiberglass versions can be qualified side by side on your cartons before you commit. Contact us through the inquiry form for TDS sheets and trial rolls of the E series. Values are laboratory averages; trial the specified tape on your cartons before committing volume.
