A sealed carton is only as secure as its seal. Standard packing tape can be peeled, the contents accessed, and the tape smoothed back down — leaving no trace. Tamper-evident tape changes the equation: it does not stop anyone from opening the carton, but it makes sure you know someone did. This guide explains the three mechanisms, when they are worth the premium, and their limits.
VOID-release: peeling the tape reveals a hidden message — “VOID”, “OPENED” — left behind on the carton surface. The message cannot be realigned invisibly, so any interference is obvious at a glance.
Destructible film: the tape fragments into tiny pieces on removal. It cannot be lifted in one piece and reapplied, which defeats the peel-and-reseal trick on smooth, non-porous surfaces.
Fiber-tear bond: water-activated kraft tape fuses with the corrugated fibers themselves, so removal tears the board. The damage is permanent and impossible to hide. Each mechanism trades off differently: VOID gives the clearest visual signal, destructible film suits non-porous substrates, and fiber-tear is the most permanent on kraft-compatible board.
High-value electronics, pharmaceuticals, and any lane where in-transit pilferage or returns fraud is a known cost. Chain-of-custody shipments too — samples, warranty returns, regulated goods — where proving the carton arrived unopened has contractual value. The rule is arithmetic: if a single compromised carton costs more than the tape upcharge across the whole shipment, specify tamper-evident.
Tamper-evident tape detects; it does not prevent. It also needs an inspection protocol — a VOID message nobody checks is decoration. Define who inspects, at which handoff, and what triggers rejection before the first roll ships. And effectiveness is substrate-dependent: always test on your actual cartons, because release coatings and dusty recycled board change the behavior.
| Decision | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Threat model | In-transit pilferage, returns fraud, or chain of custody |
| Mechanism | VOID-release, destructible film, or fiber-tear bond |
| Substrate | Tested on your carton board — virgin vs. recycled matters |
| Message and print | Custom VOID text or logo, legible at carton distance |
| Inspection protocol | Who checks, at which handoff, what triggers rejection |
