Tape for Automatic Case Sealers: A Specification Guide for Jam-Free Operation

Tape for Automatic Case Sealers: A Specification Guide for Jam-Free Operation

October 04, 2026

On an automatic case sealer, the tape is part of the machine. Operators blame the sealer for jams; half the time the sealer is fine and the roll is wrong — wrong core, wrong outer diameter, wrong unwind tension. Specifying tape for machine application is a different job than specifying tape for a hand gun. This guide covers the four specs that decide whether the machine runs or stops.

1. Roll geometry: core, outer diameter, width

The mandrel, the tape head, and the cutoff blade all assume a roll within tolerance. Core inside diameter must match the mandrel — a loose core wobbles, a tight core will not load. Outer diameter must clear the tape head housing — oversize rolls rub and stall. Width must match the head setting — a 48 mm head fed with 50 mm tape is a daily jam. Action: pull the machine’s roll specification sheet and match all three numbers before ordering, not after the first service call.

2. Thickness and unwind force

Thicker tape resists the cutoff blade; thinner tape stretches and snaps under the wipe-down rollers. Unwind force matters as much as thickness: a roll that unwinds too freely telescopes and feeds crooked, while one that unwinds too stiffly stalls the feed. Specify machine-grade rolls with controlled unwind — and stay with the qualified grade, because switching suppliers changes the unwind profile even when the width and thickness look identical.

3. Adhesive behavior at machine-room temperature

Machine rooms are cold in winter, and the tape sits in the head overnight. An adhesive that needs 20°C to wet out will flag on the first cartons of the morning shift. If the packing area drops toward 10°C seasonally, specify the adhesive for the cold condition rather than the catalog condition — or condition rolls overnight in a warm room before loading.

4. Roll length and changeover

Longer rolls mean fewer changeovers, but only if the outer diameter still fits the head. Machine rolls run longer than hand rolls as standard — confirm the length and outer-diameter combination against the machine specification, not the tape catalog alone.

The pre-order checklist

Machine parameter What to specify on the tape order
Core inside diameter Match the mandrel exactly
Maximum outer diameter Below the tape head housing clearance
Tape width Match the tape head setting
Thickness Machine-grade range suited to the head and blade
Unwind force Controlled and consistent lot to lot
Adhesive Rated for the room’s lowest seasonal temperature
Roll length Longest length that respects the outer-diameter limit

JL3 builds both sides of this equation — carton sealing tapes and the KN series case sealers that run them — so roll specifications can be matched to the machine before the first carton. Contact us through the inquiry form for a machine-matched tape specification. Values are laboratory averages; trial the specified roll on your sealer before committing volume.
