Why Smart Packaging Operations Are Switching to Water Activated Tape

Why Smart Packaging Operations Are Switching to Water Activated Tape

June 30, 2026

Many buyers initially look at the price per roll and think that water-activated tape is more expensive than regular BOPP or acrylic tape, thus abandoning their choice. However, as the source factory, we usually advise customers to calculate the total cost. The real advantage of water-activated tape lies not in the unit price per roll, but in its ability to solve various hidden problems caused by plastic tape in everyday packaging.

Take anti-theft and anti-damage measures, for example. With ordinary pressure-sensitive tape, someone can easily open the box with a hairdryer or a knife and reseal it without leaving a trace. Water-activated tape uses starch-based adhesive, which, after being moistened, penetrates directly into the fibers of the corrugated cardboard. Once dry, to remove the tape, the outer paper of the box must be torn as well. This high rate of paper tearing is natural evidence of tampering. For e-commerce or high-value goods, this alone can significantly reduce theft and disputes over claims, and the savings far outweigh the difference in tape price.

Let's also talk about the problem of cardboard boxes bursting open. When packing automotive parts, home appliances, or heavy industrial components, cardboard boxes often bulge in the middle when full, pushing the tape outwards. Ordinary tape either curls at the edges or breaks completely. In our product line, for this type of heavy-duty packaging, we reinforce the boxes with fiberglass sandwiched within the kraft paper. This is equivalent to adding a structural binding strap around the box. No matter how heavy the box is or how bumpy the journey, the seams won't tear, completely solving the pain point of rework during unpacking at distribution centers.

Some people think that water-activated tape needs to be wetted, which slows down packaging. Actually, our automatic water-activated tape dispenser has already solved this problem. The machine precisely wets and cuts the tape to the correct length the instant it's dispensed, without wasting a second. Because the starch adhesive bonds immediately upon contact with the cardboard box, workers don't need to smooth the tape edges by hand, nor do they need to wait for it to cool like with hot melt adhesive. This not only increases sealing speed but also avoids the problems of stringing and overflowing adhesive that often occur with hot melt adhesive, making the production line run more smoothly. Water-activated tape can achieve a complete seal with a single tape, compared to traditional BOPP tape which requires multiple layers of sealing. Water-activated tape effectively saves on tape usage and time costs. Therefore, while we can't say it's cheaper than ordinary BOPP tape, the cost should be comparable.

Finally, there are the crucial environmental and recyclability standards. Globally, regulations on plastic packaging are becoming increasingly stringent. Plastic tape and synthetic adhesives can clog pulper filters during recycling, contaminating the entire pulp bin. Water-activated tape's base material is kraft paper, and the adhesive is starch, both of which are water-soluble. Customers don't need to tear the tape upon receiving the goods; recycling centers can simply throw the box and tape together into the pulper. This not only helps brands easily meet environmental compliance requirements but also allows them to confidently label their packaging as recyclable.
